Life in the Shed (Studio)

Having started my creative life on a drawing board its an absolute pleasure to return to the analogue world of Lino Cutting. The shed smells of turpentine and white spirit and occasionally sawdust, after all it is a shed. I'm very lucky to have this space its just big enough for my needs providing I don't want to hang more than ten prints to dry.

Lino Printing is just about the most basic form of printing, you cut away the bits you don't want to print, roll some ink on it, place some paper on top and rub it down. You then peel it back and for the first time see if it worked or not, its always a surprise. I personally love the physical engagement of both the cutting and the printing.

I use the best materials I can find, traditional oil based inks and hard lino. The choice of paper is rather more complex and is dependent on size, composition and thickness. My current favourite paper is Japanese Washi hand made paper made by Awagami, I hope my work does justice to the crafts people who make it.

Each print is signed and numbered, I have never produced an edition of more than twenty and my colour reduction print editions may be as low as seven or eight.
